Elementary Music Education
In elementary general music programs, students in grades 1-6 will build a foundation of musical knowledge through developmental experiences involving singing, playing instruments, listening, movement, creative expression, and music reading.
Orchestra: Grades 5-12
Students will develop technique, music reading, understanding of musical concepts, and musical expression through a wide variety of repertoire and skills-based instrumental performance. Composition, improvisation, music history, and music theory will be explored throughout the grade levels.
Band: Grades 6-12
The band experience in the School District of New Berlin takes students through a course of study that allows students to have significant music performance experiences on wind and percussion instruments. Beginning band in 6th grade provides exposure and early instruction in musical performance; middle school band in 7th and 8th grade expands the experience to include public performances ranging for solo and small ensembles to large group music; and high school band provides experiences in serious wind and percussion literature, marching band, athletic performances and instruction and experiences in the performance of jazz.
Choir: Grades 7-12
Choir deals with changing adolescent and maturing voices. Students will learn good vocal habits and basic choral techniques, basic music theory and ear-training, while exploring various styles of choral music. Students are given opportunities to increase self-confidence through required evening concerts and optional solo/ensemble festivals.
