Information Technology and Computer Science
Information Technology and Computer Science involve the use of computers, software, and telecommunications equipment to store, retrieve, transmit and manipulate data in the context of a business or other enterprise. The School District of New Berlin offers a wide variety of learning experiences to help students understand the breadth of the industry as well as the many different types of career opportunities available. For example:
TechKNOW IT Help Desk Program: This program helps participants learn problem-solving skills by diagnosing hardware/software issues on site in the SDNB. Participants have the option to pursue a number of valuable industry certifications that can lead to a paid work placement with the School District of New Berlin or other industry partners.
Opportunities in Computer Science: The School District of New Berlin has a wide range of coursework beginning with the elective wheel in Grade 7 where students sample computer science, graphic arts and engineering.
Students with a general interest in how technology is applied across industries are encouraged to take a course sequence that includes AP computer science principles. This course includes topics related to the management of computer systems, cybersecurity, Big Data, Internet of Things and artificial intelligence.
Students who choose to continue with a focus on programming can complete a course sequence that includes AP Computer Science A (Java) and a dual enrollment Data Structures course in partnership with Marquette University.
Additional electives are available in game design and web development.
