Project Lead the Way (PLTW)/Engineering
Engineering involves the design and production of complex systems and products to solve identified problems. The engineering process applies to many different disciplines including social/behavioral systems, decision support, software, biomedical, mechanical, production, etc. We deliver engineering curriculum through Project Lead The Way because it simulates a collaborative work environment and contributes to the overall development of knowledge, skills and dispositions that are important regardless of what students may choose to pursue after high school. For example, students will:
- Work in collaborative groups to complete activities, create a variety of projects, and solve problems in creative ways.
- Create detailed documentation of designs in an Engineering Notebook and Portfolio
- Apply technical, hands-on skills to create design prototypes
- Integrate knowledge from a variety of subject areas to create and communicate solutions to problems
- Develop project management, time management, and organizational skills
- Practice perseverance and learn from mistakes
PLTW Programs in the SDNB:
- PLTW Gateway to Technology is integrated into the elective wheel in Grade 7 and offered as electives in Grade 8.
- PLTW Engineering, Biomedical and Computer Science is offered to secondary students.
- Some classes are offered at one middle/high school; in that case, transportation is provided to ensure access for all students.
